Prior to coaching, Burroughs competed for four years at Williams College where she was a walk-on rower with no prior experience. The Ephs earned several NCAA DIII team points accolades in that time, placing second in 2014 and 2017, third in 2016, and fifth in 2015. Burroughs made her first NCAA appearance in 2016 as a spare and returned in 2017 to race in the second varsity 8+, placing third. At the regional level, Burroughs raced for back-to-back gold medals in 2016 and 2017 at the ECAC/NIRC Championships in the third varsity 8+. She was named captain by her teammates and coaches for the 2016-2017 season, and received NESCAC All-Sportsmanship recognition in 2017.

While at Williams, Burroughs studied Art and History and earned NESCAC and ECAC/NIRC All-Academic honors 2015-17. She received her B.A. in 2017.
