Rowing Opens 2016-17 Season at Quinsigamond Snake Regatta

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Mount Holyoke College rowing team kicked-off its 2016-17 season in fine fashion on Saturday, competing at the Quinsigamond Snake Regatta on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester. The Lyons saw all four boats finish well, powered by an 11th-place effort by the varsity eight crew.

MHC was 11th of 27 overall boats in the varsity eight race, posting a time of 15:44.436. The Lyons bested several other conference crews in the race, which was won by WPI in a time of 14:43.606. The V8 boat was powered by coxswain Leela Woody, Meghan Ryan (S), Elizabeth Hazen (7), Briana Chace (6), Molly Lapointe (5), Sharlow Hitchcock (4), Suzannah Lickus (3), Ariya Lawson (2) and Kelly Chambers (B).

In the varsity four race, MHC also posted 11th in a field of 17 boats, crossing with a time of 19:59.909. The overall race winner was the University of New Hampshire, which had a mark of 17:07.786. Comprising the V4 crew was coxswain Zoe Zelkowitz, Haley Mahoney (S), Nicole Villacres (3), Clare Zicare (2), Mira Kelly-Fair (B).

The Lyons saw two entries in the novice eight race, powered by the 'A' boat, which finished eighth of 16 total boats. MHC's A crew had a time of 18:23.345, while the B boat came in with a mark of 18:42.589 - which was good for 12th overall. Vermont was the overall race winner with a time of 16:23.847.

Leading the N8 A boat was coxswain Maya Sterett, Lan Liu (S), Emily Pollack (7), Mahirah Mustaffa (6), Liv McCauley (5), Grace Remillard (4), Emma Taylor (3), Morgan Lemos (2) and Mira Rosenkotz (B).

Powering the N8 B crew was coxswain Hashma Shahid, Adelita Simon (S), Xinqi Li (7), Madaline Lee (6), Olivia Vejcik (5), Amelia Green (4), Adi Insley (3), Hannah LeBlanc (2) and Emma Tolerton (B).

Mount Holyoke returns to action on October 30, when it heads to Smith to compete in the 2016 Seven Sisters Championship.
