Basketball Suffers Setback to Elmira in Non-Conference Play

South Hadley, Mass. - November 21, 2021 - The Mount Holyoke College basketball team fell to visiting Elmira College, 46-26, in a non-conference battle at Howard Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon.

With the loss, the Lyons fall to 1-2 on the year while the Eagles are now 5-0 to start the season. 

Leading the Lyons was Cal McGonagle (Yarmouth, Maine) who posted 11 points to go along with four rebounds while Annika Brooks (Portland, Maine) notched seven points and a team-best 10 rebounds. The Eagles were led by 16 points from Desiree Roy who also collected nine rebounds in the win. 

Mount Holyoke shot 8-for-52 (15.4%) in the loss while Elmira was 19-for-70 (27.1%) in the win. The Eagles held a 56-49 edge in rebounds but dominated the Lyons in the paint, 32-6.

McGonagle had back-to-back jumpers for Mount Holyoke in the first quarter, giving the Lyons a 4-1 lead, which they would hold until the first-year extended the hosts' lead to five with another basket with 16 seconds on the clock. Elmira's D'Asia Jones made a jumper as time expired to make it 6-3, Lyons, after one.

Elmira took a quick 8-6 lead after a three pointer from Ahnaiya Free with 8:19 to play in the first half before the Eagles opened a 17-9 lead on a lay-up from Taylor Albrecht with 2:38 on the clock. Brooks would make a free-throw and follow it up with a bucket with seven seconds left in the half as Elmira took a 17-13 lead into the break.

Back-to-back layups from Annika Johnson (Tampa, Fla.) and McGonagle pulled the Lyons to within one, trailing 22-21 with 5:15 to play in the third quarter before a pair of free throws from Albrecht pushed Elmira's lead back to six with a 29-23 advantage heading to the fourth.

Albrecht's layup with 7:02 remaining gave Elmira an 11-point lead before Roy picked up an offensive board an put-back layup to make it 37-24 with 6:50 remaining. From there, both sides would empty their benches as the Eagles coasted to a 46-26 win.

Mount Holyoke will next travel to MCLA on Saturday, December 4 for a 12 p.m. tilt with the Trailblazers.
