Basketball Opens Season With 40-31 Win at Wentworth

Boston, Mass. - November 13, 2021 - Three student-athletes produced double doubles on Saturday afternoon as the Mount Holyoke College basketball team started the season with a win for the first time since 2013-14. The Lyons defeated Wentworth, 40-31, at the Nelson Recreation Center.

With the win, the Lyons are now 1-0 while the Leopards fall to 0-3. Mount Holyoke shot 16-for-69 (23.2%) from the field while the Leopards were 11-of-52 (21.2%) from the field in the setback. The Lyons owned the boards, 57-42, and dominated in the paint, holding a 28-14 scoring advantage.

First-year guard Cal McGonagle (Yarmouth, Maine) finished with a team best 13 points to go along with 10 rebounds, while Annika Brooks (Portland, Maine) recorded 10 points with a game-high 17 rebounds and a career-best seven steals in the win. First-year guard Annika Johnson (Tampa, Fla.) also notched 10 points and 10 rebounds in 32 minutes played. 

Wentworth was led by 10 points from Kayla Kelley who also recorded eight rebounds in the setback. Abriana Busbey also chipped in eight points to go along with eight rebounds.

Brooks picked up a free-throw and followed up with a lay-up to give the Lyons a 3-2 lead at the 6:39 mark of the first quarter, before McGonagle accounted for three-consecutive buckets for Mount Holyoke, giving the visitors a 9-7 advantage with 3:29 to play in the frame. McGonagle converted a three-point play to push the Lyons lead to five, before the Leopards crawled to within one, making it 12-11 heading to the second quarter.

Kelley hit a three-pointer for Wentworth which was followed by a free-throw from Gabby Amoddio to give the hosts a 20-16 lead with 2:13 to play in the first half. From there, Wentworth would tack on another point before Katherine Rha (Douglaston, N.Y.) and McGonagle converted free-throws, sending the Lyons into the halftime break trailing 21-19. 

A 6-0 run capped by a jumper from Johnson helped Mount Holyoke to a 31-25 advantage late in the third quarter, before Brooks hit a lay-up just 29 seconds into the fourth quarter to make it 33-27. McGonagle gave the Lyons their biggest lead of the game with a free-throw at the 5:55 mark, making it 37-27, before Brooks sealed the game with another basket with 34 seconds remaining.

Up next, Mount Holyoke College will play their first game in Howard Gymnasium on Wednesday, November 17 as the Lyons take on Dean College at 7 p.m.
