Boston, Mass. - January 22, 2020 - The Mount Holyoke College basketball team traveled to Emerson College for a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest in Brown and Plofker Gymnasium and suffered an 87-31 setback to the Lions.

Leading Mount Holyoke College was first-year point guard Ellie Hayward (Westmoreland, N.H.), who posted 13 points, while first-year forward Kyra Sanborn-Burch (Tariffville, Conn.) finished with 10 points and two rebounds. Junior forward Annika Brooks (Portland, Maine) also notched eight points and a team-best six rebounds. 

Emerson jumped out to an early 7-0 advantage just 1:43 into the contest but the run was stopped when Sanborn-Burch converted a lay-up at the 8:07 mark for the Lyons' first basket of the game. Brooks scored her first points of the game at the 4:23 mark with a free throw, before Sanborn-Burch made one of her own at 2:37. Sanborn-Burch would go on to convert another lay-up and Hayward would hit a three at the 1:07 mark of the first quarter but Emerson carried a 26-9 advantage into the break.

Hayward opened the second quarter with back-to-back jumpers in just 32 seconds, before making a lay-up at the 8:15 mark to pull the Lyons back to within 13. Hayward converted the three-point play to make it a 12-point game, before Brooks made a jumper and Sanborn-Burch buried a three with 3:24 on the clock. 

Sanborn-Burch and Brooks both hit free-throws midway through the frame before Brooks added another with 2:24 remaining in the third quarter. Just 13 seconds later, Hayward made a free throw, before converting two more with 28 seconds on the clock in the period.

Brooks dropped in a short jumper with 3:41 to play, giving the Lyons 30 points, before the junior hit a free throw just 1:28 later to round out the scoring for Mount Holyoke.

The Lyons shot 10-for-36 (27.8%) in the setback while Emerson was 37-for-67 (55.2%) and held a 41-22 advantage on the glass. Mount Holyoke College drops to 1-16 on the year and 0-2 in conference play while Emerson is now 11-5 overall with a 2-0 mark against league opponents.

Up next, Mount Holyoke College will return to Howard Gymnasium on Saturday, January 22 when the Lyons host Springfield College at 1 p.m.
