Basketball Shoulders Tough Loss in NEWMAC Opener

NEW LONDON, Conn. - Four Bears reached double-figures as the Coast Guard Academy earned a conference-opening win over Mount Holyoke College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Wednesday. The Bears move to 2-4 on the young season with a 1-0 conference mark, while the Lyons slip to 0-7 and 0-1 in the NEWMAC.

Leading the Bears was Zoe Riis-Fallica, who recorded a game-high 15 points, while adding five assists and two boards. Micaela Martinelli had 14 points with three assists, two steals and three rebounds, while Annabella Farabaugh came off the bench to also record 14 points. Julia Guerro added a game-best six assists, while Emma Puddington had 10 points.

For the Lyons, sophomore Annika Brooks was the only player to record a double-double, posting a game-best 15 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Junior Katlyn Grover had nine points with an assist and a steal, while senior Leah Hodges notched eight points and seven rebounds.

Coast Guard came out strong to open the contest and held a commanding lead following the first 20 minutes of action. The Lyons put up 12 points in the final quarter, 10 of those coming from Brooks alone.

Mount Holyoke returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Wellesley at 1pm. The game is VIP Day and the SAAC sponsored Game of the Week. Coast Guard is also back on the court on Saturday, hosting Wheaton at 1pm.
