Basketball Concludes the Season at Wellesley

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College used 15 points from two different players to help defeat the Mount Holyoke College basektbale team, 68-19 in the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) finale for both teams on Saturday at Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse. With the win, the Blue improve to 9-14 ovearlall and 6-10 in the conference, while MHC ends the season 0-24 overall.

Senior Kayla Jang (South Pasadena, Calif.) recorded a game-high 15 points, seven assists, and eight steals in the win, while Chelsea Brown (San Jose, Calif.) added seven points and six rebounds. Wellesley sophomore Caitlin Aguirre (El Paso, Texas) matched Jang with a game-high 15 points, while adding six steals.

First year GraceAnne Woods (Glen Cove, N.Y.) dropped in six points and grabbed four steals to lead the Lyons. Junior Zahkeyah Allen (Philadelphia, Pa.) and first year Susan Percival (Hyattsville, Md.) each chipped in with four points.

Mount Holyoke got on the board first at 8:41 when Woods sunk a jumper, but the Blue countered when sophomore Emily Kopp (King Ferry, N.Y.) made a layup at 7:42 to spark a 14-point run that would end the first quarter of play with Wellesley leading 14-2. The Blue scored the next six points in the opening minutes of the second quarter. Woods scored four of her six points during the second, starting with a layup at 7:45 to make the score 20-4 but the Lyons continued to trail at halftime, 32-15.

Wellesley increased their lead to 54-15 heading into the fourth. Aguirre scored 12 of her 15 points in the second half, scoring seven in the third on a 3-of-3 shooting. Seniors Jang and Brown sunk back-to-back three pointers at 9:45 and 8:56 in the fourth quarter to increase Wellesley's lead to 60-15. Aguirre then secured the last five points of the game, making a jumper at 3:43 and sinking a three pointer at 1:59 to give the Blue the 68-19 win.
