Basketball Suffers NEWMAC Loss at Coast Guard

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Three players reached double-figures as the Coast Guard Academy defeated Mount Holyoke College, 88-26 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Wednesday night. The Bears improved to 5-6 on the season and 2-2 in conference play, while the Lyons slip to 0-10 and 0-4 in the NEWMAC.

Junior Micaela Martinelli led all scorers with 18 points and five rebounds. Sophomore Zoe Riis-Fallica scored 13 points and grabbed four steals while first year Brenna Farrington made a trio of three pointers on her way to 11 points, three assists and seven rebounds.

Junior Leah Hodges had a team high 12 points for the Lyons, while first year Ireland Clare Kennedy posted a squad-best five rebounds and three steals.

Coast Guard dominated from the jump running out to a 26-2 lead. Senior Gillian Gerton had six points and six rebounds while Martinelli added six points on 3-5 shooting in the opening quarter. The Bears took advantage of nine steals in the first quarter with 13 points off turnovers.

The visiting Lyons got a bucket from first year Susan Percival with 2:28 to go in the second frame, but the Bears continued to dominate as Annabella Farabaugh drained a layup with 28 seconds left to put the home team up 53-8. A pair of free throws from Hodges helped close the gap as Coast Guard headed into halftime with the 53-10 advantage.

Mount Holyoke had a solid effort in the fourth quarter as free throws from Clare Kennedy sank a pair of free throws, while junior Michaela Butin scored with just 49 seconds remaining.

Coast Guard is back in action next Tuesday when it hosts Wheaton at 7pm. The Lyons return to action on Saturday in a 1pm game at Babson.
