Basketball Falls In Conference Dual Against Springfield College

Springfield, Mass. - December 6, 2017 - The Springfield College women's basketball defeated Mount Holyoke, 88-29, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Wednesday night in Blake Arena.

With the win, Springfield College improves to 5-2 on the year and remains unbeaten in conference play as the Pride is now 3-0 in the NEWMAC. With the loss, Mount Holyoke falls to 0-7 overall and 0-3 against league opponents. The Pride, which shot 39-for-68 (57.4%) in the win, held a 47-13 advantage in rebounds, while the Lyons were impressive from the free-throw line, converting 12 of its 16 chances from the charity stripe.

Sophomore guard Lauren Rudolph (Franklin, Mass.) and freshman forward Maddie Fay (Braintree, Mass.) led the way with 14 points apiece, as Fay also collected eight rebounds in the win. Senior forward Heather King (Lebanon, N.H.) had 12 points, while junior guard Chelsea McAllister (Baltimore, Vt.) notched 10 points, seven assists and three rebounds in the victory.

The Lyons were led by Katlyn Grover (Bernardston, Mass.), who tallied 13 points in the setback, while Kate Rawson (Old Town, Maine) posted a team-high three rebounds. 

Springfield College jumped out to an early 10-0 lead in the first 2:44 following a three-pointer from Ashley Rouleau (Chicopee, Mass.), before five-consecutive points from Grover made it a 12-5 game with 6:35 on the clock. From there, the Pride would go on a 23-0 run over the next 5:48, capped by a lay-up from Taylor Hall (Tolland, Conn.) to give Springfield College a 35-5 lead at the end of one. In the run, senior forward King registered eight points, which is what she would finish the frame with.

Up 40-6 following a lay-up  from Hall with 7:24 to play in the first half, Grover and Rawson both converted free throws to make it 44-9, Pride, but a basket from Rouleau with six seconds left in the frame would give Springfield College a 46-9 lead at the break.

Springfield College made it a 57-14 game with 4:11 to play in the third quarter following a basket from McAllister, before it was 64-21, Springfield College, following a three-pointer from Rudolph with 1:49 on the clock. From there, Fay hit back-to-back lay-ups to end the stanza, giving Springfield College a 68-22 lead heading into the fourth.

Fay and Rudolph stayed hot in the fourth quarter, as the duo, along with Allie Brennan (North Haven, Conn.) pushed Springfield College's lead to 59 following a jumper from Fay with 3:30 on the clock, before the Pride ran out the clock and sealed the 88-27 victory.

Both teams will be on the road on Saturday as the Pride takes on Worcester State at 1 p.m, and the Lyons face Mount Ida in non-conference action at 1 p.m..
