Basketball Falls to Maine Maritime at Curry Tip-Off Tournament

MILTON, Mass. - Backed by a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds from Alayne Felix, the Maine Maritime Academy earned an 80-30 victory over Mount Holyoke College in the first game of the Curry College Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday. 

The victory moves the Mariners to 1-1 on the season and they will play host Curry College on Sunday in the championship game at 3pm. The Lyons fall to 0-2 overall and will play Pine Manor in the consolation game at 1pm.

Maine Maritime broke out to a quick 6-0 lead through the opening quarter, but the Lyons tied the contest and grabbed an 8-6 advantage with 1:58 left on the clock. Ireland Clare Kennedy sparked the effort, scoring a jumper to get MHC on the board and nailing a layup following a tying bucket by GraceAnne Woods for the leading margin. Maine Maritime's Megan McLean converted a shot and a free throw at the line to regain the advantage, but a pair of free throws by Woods pulled the Lyons even once more. The Mariners responded with five straight points to close out the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Lyons pulled it to within 17-13 following a three-pointer from Raquel Fitzpatrick, but the Mariners outscored MHC 17-7 over the final 8:18 for a 38-20 advantage at halftime.

Following intermission, Maine Maritime continued to dominate using solid defense to hold the Lyons to just 10 points over the final two quarters for the victory.

In addition to Felix, who also posted a steal, Emily Melick added 11 points, two steals and a rebound, while McLean chipped in with nine points, seven steals, two rebounds and an assist. Morgan Boudreau added a game-high 11 rebounds.

Katlyn Grover led Mount Holyoke with 11 points, including the Lyons three points in the third quarter, adding one rebound and a steal. Woods notched a team-high nine rebounds with eight points and a steal. Fitzpatrick added five points, while Clare Kennedy finished with six points.
