Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Oct. 5th

 

FIELD HOCKEY

The field hockey team posted a 3-0 win at Clark in their only game last week. Sophomore Sophie Perekslis (Millerton, N.Y.) paced the effort with a pair of goals. Mount Holyoke (5-4; 1-1 NEWMAC) is back in action on Tuesday when it travels to Northampton for a 7pm match at Smith. The Lyons will then host Simmons on Thursday (7pm) before closing out the week at Springfield on Saturday (4pm).

SOCCER

The Lyons went 1-1 last week, posting a 9-0 win over Bay Path, before shouldering a 2-0 loss to MIT. Senior Ashleigh Hartsock (Stevensville, Md.) notched her first collegiate hat trick in the win over the Wildcats, while MHC saw its six-game unbeaten streak (5-0-1) come to an end in the loss to the Engineers. Mount Holyoke (6-3-1; 1-1-1 NEWMAC) is back on the pitch on Tuesday, traveling to Clark for a 6:30pm game. The Lyons close out the week on Saturday with a 12pm game at Wellesley.

TENNIS

Mount Holyoke posted a 9-0 win at Clark in their only match last week. The Lyons were led by multiple efforts, including Ayame Yazawa (Tokyo, Japan) and Margaux Holloschutz (Franklin Lakes, N.J.), who combined for a first doubles win. MHC (6-2; 4-2 NEWMAC) is back on the court on Tuesday at Springfield (5pm). The Lyons close out the week with their final NEWMAC regular season contest, hosting Babson at 1pm.

 

VOLLEYBALL

The Lyons went 1-2 last week, shouldering losses to Wellesley and Regis, while beating Worcester State. MHC was led by first year middle hitter Jamesa Allen (Orlando, Fla.) in the victory as she notched a match-best 11 kills and a match-high five block solos. MHC (6-8; 0-6 NEWMAC) returns to action on Tuesday, traveling to Coast Guard for their only match of the week at 7pm.

CROSS COUNTRY

MHC finished seventh of 43 teams in the 'white' race of the 2015 Paul Short Invitational. Leading the way once again was senior Elizabeth DeLeon, who finished 10th overall in a field of 328 runners. The Lyons are back in action on Saturday when they compete at the 2015 Open New England Championships, hosted in Boston at Franklin Park.

RIDING

The Lyons were victorious in their regular season debut last week, capturing High Point honors at the Smith College Show. Overall, MHC earned 10 blue ribbons on the day and saw 18 riders finish in the top three. Mount Holyoke is now idle until October 17 when it competes at the Williams College Show.


GOLF

Mount Holyoke finished seventh overall at the 2015 Middlebury Invitational. Leading the way was junior captain June Conti (Amenia, N.Y.), finished in a tie for 11th overall, shooting 75 on day one and 89 on day two, for a combined score of 164. The Lyons are back on the links this weekend when they compete at the Williams Fall Invitational, hosted by Williams College. Action begins on Saturday and runs through Sunday.


ROWING

Under the direction of second-year head coach Heather Putnam, the Lyons rowing team opens its 2015-16 campaign on Saturday at the Quinsigamond Snake Regatta, held on Worcester's Lake Quinsigamond. MHC looks to improve upon last year's efforts, which saw the squad finish second at the Seven Sisters Regatta and seventh at the NEWMAC Championship.
