Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Apr. 11th

RIDING

Mount Holyoke saw a number of outstanding performances on Saturday at the Zone 1 Championships, including senior Genevieve Couldwell (Salt Lake City, Utah), who aced her sudden death round to take the win in individual intermediate flat and move on to Nationals. The Lyons, who finished second overall, and this year's Zone 1 Champions from the University of Vermont, both advance to compete at this year's IHSA National Championships which run from May 5-8 in Lexington, Kentucky.

 

TRACK & FIELD

Mount Holyoke was paced by several strong efforts on Saturday at the non-team scoring Pioneer Invitational, hosted by Smith. Leading the way was senior Elizabeth DeLeon (Boise, Idaho), who won the 1500-meter run, crossing the line in a time of 5:03.02. She also finished eighth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:32.78. The Lyons are back in action on Saturday when they compete at the Springfield Invitational.

 

LACROSSE

The Lyons suffered defeat at the hands of Wheaton and Springfield last week in NEWMAC action. Junior attack Charlotte Wagner (West Chester, Pa.) recorded a team-high six goals on the week, including five against Wheaton. Mount Holyoke (1-8; 0-4 NEWMAC) is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Coast Guard at 6pm on the Turf Field. MHC concludes the week on Saturday in a 1pm contest at MIT. TENNIS

Mount Holyoke went 2-2 last week at the 2016 Seven Sisters Championship, posting wins over Bryn Mawr and Smith, while shouldering tough losses to Wellesley and champion Vassar. Senior captain Margaux Holloschutz (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) and first year Ayame Yazawa (Tokyo, Japan) were named to the All-Seven Sisters Tournament Team for their efforts. MHC (12-9) returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Gordon College at 4:30pm. The Lyons will close out the week and the season on Saturday hosting Endicott at 10:30am.

 

ROWING

The Lyons saw its varsity eight finish third of six teams last weekend in action on Lake Quinsigamond. MHC also saw its second varsity eight place third overall in the event. Mount Holyoke is back in the water next weekend when it travels to New London, Conn., on Saturday. The Lyons will square off against Coast Guard and Johnson & Wales on the Thames River.

 

GOLF

Mount Holyoke returned to the links this weekend, opening its spring season at the Vassar Invitational. The Lyons finished ninth overall, led by a 16th place finish from junior captain June Conti (Amenia, N.Y.). MHC returns to action next weekend when it competes at the Jack Leaman Invitational, hosted by Amherst at Hickory Ridge. Competition gets underway on Saturday and runs through Sunday.
