SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Madeline Hamstra's goal in the second quarter stood up as the winning score as Wellesley College defeated the Mount Holyoke College field hockey team 1-0 Saturday on the MHC Turf.
Wellesley (6-3, 2-0 NEWMAC) stayed undefeated in NEWMAC play and left Mount Holyoke with an 0-2 conference record, 6-4 overall. The Blue have won their past five games against the Lyons.
Hamstra tallied her second goal of the season with 2:24 remaining in the half, breaking a scoreless tie.
Mount Holyoke was held without a shot until the fourth quarter, when first-year MJ Owens (Fairfield, Conn.) was stopped on a breakaway with 2:20 remaining in the game, as Wellesley goalkeeper Maddie Miller came out of the goal to stuff Owens' progress.
Wellesley earned six penalty corners, all in the second half, while Mount Holyoke had none.
Miller made one save to earn her second shutout of the season, lowering her goals-against average to 0.22 on the season.
Mount Holyoke senior Rachel Katzenberg (Reisterstown, Md.) made seven saves in the loss.
Mount Holyoke returns to action with a NEWMAC game at Clark University on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 2pm. Wellesley will host Nichols in a non-conference contest on Wednesday at 6pm.
