SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Pride capitalized on three goals in each half to defeat Mound Holyoke College, 6-0 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey action on Tuesday evening. Springfield is now 8-3 and 3-1 in conference play, while the Lyons slip to 5-6 and are 1-4 in the NEWMAC.
Springfield opened the game's scoring just 3:53 into the opening stanza as Amanda Nusbaum fed the ball to Kyra Ashe for the score. Ashe then made it a 2-0 advantage less than 15 minutes later, converting past Lyons' keeper Morgan Turner. The Pride wrapped-up the first half scoring at 23:07 as Nusbaum earned her second helper of the night following a feed to Rachael Curtis.
The second half of action saw Ashe earn her first assist of the evening as she passed the ball to Kirsten Oliver at 46:28, who converted for the goal. Nusbam made it a five-goal lead at 60:24 and Gabby Inkel wrapped-up the game's scoring less than seven minutes later.
Despite being kept off the scoreboard, the Lyons continued to fight throughout the contest, shoulderinig just an 18-15 disadvantage in shots. First year Margaret Robb put back-to-back shots on Springfield goalie Emmalie Drake as she carried the ball back up field on opposite possessions.
MHC had a penalty corner chance at 56:08, but rookie Kylie Brooks was unable to convert the insert from senior Kristina Ramsden, the ball going just wide past Drake.
Drake earned the victory in goal for the Pride, stopping seven shots. Turner shouldered the loss for MHC, making four saves in the first half before giving way to sophomore Maddie Miller, who had six saves in the second half.
Mount Holyoke returns to action on Saturday when it welcomes Wellesley in NEWMAC action at 12pm on the Turf Field. Springfield is back in action on Friday, hosting Smith at 6pm.
