Lyons mount second-half comeback but fall in overtime to No. 17 MIT

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - Abby Baldwin (Florence, Mass. / Northampton) scored a pair of second-half goals to force overtime, but Amanda Garofalo's (Fairfield, N.J. / West Essex Regional) game-winner gave the Massachusetts Institute of Technology a 4-3 (OT) victory over Mount Holyoke College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference action at the Mount Holyoke Turf Field, Saturday. The No. 17-ranked Engineers improve to 6-3 on the year (1-1 NEWMAC), while the Lyons fall to 4-4 (1-1 NEWMAC).

Garofalo opened the scoring in the fourth minute, as she took advantage of a rebound off Lyons goalkeeper Morgan Turner (Chester, N.J. / West Morris Mendham). Devon Goetz (Rockville, Md. / Richard Montgomery) extended the Beavers' lead in the 20th minute, with Mia Reilly (Los Angeles, Calif. / Harvard-Westlake School) picking up the assist. Mirei Golding-Powers (San Francisco, Calif. / San Francisco University HS) cut the lead in half for Mount Holyoke with just over five minutes to go in the half as she moved to her right and planted a shot into the left side of the goal. 

In the second half, MIT restored the two goal lead on Laura Chen's (Califon, N.J. / Voorhees) unassisted tally in the 39th minute. Baldwin replied for the Lyons in the 52nd minute, as she picking up a rebound off a shot by Golding-Powers. Baldwin tied the game with five minutes left in regulation, with Kass Lawrence (Holyoke, Mass. / Holyoke) picking up the assist. Turner turned aside a shot by Goetz in the closing stages to keep the game alive and send it to overtime.

In the extra period, Golding-Powers had the first chance to score, as her shot in the fourth minute was blocked by Taylor Grey (Horsham, Pa. / Mount Saint Joseph Academy). However, the Engineers took the ball down the field and sent Goetz free on a breakaway. She passed to Garofalo, who put an end to proceedings with a shot to the right side of the cage.

Turner took loss for the Lyons, as she made five saves. Grace Moore (Boston, Mass. / Dexter Southfield) made 10 saves for the Engineers to pick up the win. Mount Holyoke outshot MIT 19-15 in the game.

The Lyons return to action on Thursday, as they visit Western New England University at 7 p.m. MIT is also back in action on Tuesday, as they again head west, this time to visit Amherst.
