NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College field hockey team scored a goal in each half on its way to a 2-0 victory over Mount Holyoke College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Pioneers move to 8-8 overall and 4-3 in conference play, while the Lyons slip to 10-5 and 4-3 in the NEWMAC.

The visiting Lyons went strong on the net from the early goings, forcing Smith keeper Cameo Tietje to make a pair of saves, but the Pioneers sent four shots in on keeper Morgan Turner, capitalizing at 16:23 as Sammie Pavlov scored to give the home team a 1-0 advantage.

Mount Holyoke had a number of quality chances over the remainder of the frame, including three penalty corners, but were unable to convert, including a save by Tietje and a defensive stop by Beatrice Chaudoin off a pair of Mirjam Keochakian shots late in the half.

Smith came out strong in the second stanza, earning three penalty corners to start things off. The Pioneers capitalized once against at 50:16, as Alex Larosee converted a pass from Chaudoin past Turner for the 2-0 advantage.

The Lyons earned four penalty corners over the final six minutes of the contest, but were unable to solve the Smith defense as a pair of shots from senior Sophie Perekslis were once again stopped by Tietje and Chaudoin on the defensive save.

Smith owned a 14-12 edge in shots for the contest, while the Lyons owned a 10-6 advantage in penalty corners. Tietje earned the win for the Pioneers with six saves, while Chaudoin added two defensive stops. For the Lyons, Turner posted nine saves, while Lia Messersmith added a defensive stop.

Mount Holyoke is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Westfield State in the final regular season home game of 2017 at 7pm. Smith is also on the field on Wednesday in a road contest at Keene State at 6:30pm.
