Field Hockey Powers Past Castleton, 3-1

CASTLETON, Vt. - Two goals off the stick of junior captain Colby Newsham helped carry the Mount Holyoke College field hockey team to a 3-1 victory at Castleton University on Saturday. The Lyons move to 2-1 on the season with the victory, while the Spartans slip to 1-3.

The Lyons got things going at the 20:37 mark, taking the lead as senior captain Kaitlin Braz (Tolland, Conn./East Catholic) fed a pass through to Newsham (Harvard, Mass./Bromfield School) for the tally. Mount Holyoke pushed the advantage to 2-0 less than five minutes later as senior captain Kathryn Rawson (Old Town, Maine/Old Town) sent a pass over to fellow senior and captain Sophie Perekslis (Millerton, N.Y./Berkshire School) at 25:13.

Mount Holyoke, which held a 13-7 advantage in shots for the opening half, gained a three-goal lead at the 54:54 mark after junior midfielder Mirjam Keochakian (Hamburg, Germany/Deerfield Academy) threaded a shot to Newsham for the score.

The Spartans broke onto the scoreboard at 60:29 after junior captain Sarah Wells (Bellows Falls, Vt./Bellows Falls) took the ball from the top of the arc, split the defense and banked it past Lyons' goalie Morgan Turner (Chester, N.J./West Morris Menham).

For the contest, Mount Holyoke owned a 21-14 advantage in shots, also earning a 16-6 edge in penalty corners for the contest. Turner earned the victory with seven stops, while Spartans goalie Tashia Pashby-Rockwood (Williston, Vt./Champlain Valley Union) shouldered the loss with seven saves.

Mount Holyoke is back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Williams College for a 6:30pm match against the Ephs. Castleton is on the field on Tuesday against Plymouth State at the New Hampton School at 7pm.
