Perekslis Lifts #17 Field Hockey Past WPI, 1-0 in OT

Worcester, Mass. - Sophie Perekslis (Sheffield, MA) scored with 6:13 left in the first overtime to send No. 17 Mount Holyoke past host WPI, 1-0, in a NEWMAC Field Hockey matchup at Alumni Stadium on Tuesday evening.

With the win, the Lyons improve to 11-2 on the year and 5-1 in league play while the Engineers dip to 9-5 overall and 2-4 in the NEWMAC.

Shortly after WPI goalkeeper Lauren Puishys (Oxford, MA) stopped a pair of shots by Sarah LaQuerre (Old Orchard Beach, ME), Perekslis deflected home a shot by Kirsten Kilburn (North Branford, CT) to end the game with her 12th goal of the season. The assist from Kilburn marked the 50th of her career to give her sole possession of the all-time career assists mark.

Puishys finished the evening with eight saves while her counterpart Liz DiCesare (Westford, MA) stopped a pair of shots in regulation.

WPI had arguably the best shot in the first half when Jena Mazzucco (Danbury, CT) tested DiCesare from the right side of the cage at 31:56. Mount Holyoke had its best chance with just over 20 minutes left in regulation; however, Puishys turned away Charlotte Wagner's (West Chester, PA) chip shot to keep the game even.  The Crimson and Gray had the better of the possession time at the very start of overtime but were unable to generate any shots before Mount Holyoke seized control during the extra session.

For the game, the Lyons held a 15-3 margin in shots and an 11-3 advantage in penalty corners.

WPI closes out a five-game homestand on Saturday with its Senior Day contest versus Wheaton at noon.  Mount Holyoke is back at it on Thursday, traveling to Western New England for a 7pm contest.
