Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Oct. 9th

FIELD HOCKEY

The Lyons went 2-0 in NEWMAC action last week. MHC battled back from down one to take down NEWMAC rival Wellesley 3-2 on Saturday. Mount Holyoke (7-4; 3-2 NEWMAC) has now won three out of the last four contests between the two teams after a game winning goal by senior Sophie Perekslis (Millerton, N.Y.) with 3:34 left in regulation. MHC also picked up a 4-2 win at home on Tuesday against Springfield College behind two goals from Perekslis. The Lyons are back on the road on Wednesday for a non-conference match against Simmons College at 6pm, before returning home on Saturday to face Wheaton at 12pm. SOCCER

Mount Holyoke went 0-2-0 last week facing two NEWMAC opponents. On Tuesday, the Lyons fell to Coast Guard as the Bears scored with 13 seconds left to take the match 1-0. In the game, junior goal keeper Amanda Manaster (Beverly Hills, Calif.), who leads the conference in saves (119) saw 13 shots, making 12 stops on the night. On Friday, the Lyons shouldered a 6-0 loss to MIT on the road. Manaster recorded a career-high 20 saves in the loss. MHC (2-9-1; 0-5-0 NEWMAC) returns home for a pair of conference home games, starting Clark on Tuesday at 6pm, followed by WPI on Saturday at 2pm. VOLLEYBALL

Mount Holyoke went 2-0 in non-conference action last week, defeating both opponents, 3-0. The Lyons defeated Anna Maria behind a 10-kill, three block effort from junior Jamesa Allen (Orlando, Fla.). MHC brought the momentum back home, taking down Framingham after a 16 kill effort from sophomore Sasha Simine and six total blocks from Allen. MHC (7-6; 1-5 NEWMAC) has a busy week, starting with a home match on Tuesday against Springfield at 6pm. The Lyons will hit the road on Thursday, facing Western New England at 7pm, before playing Bard and SUNY New Paltz in tri-matach action on Saturday. CROSS COUNTRY

Mount Holyoke placed 21st of 33 teams, seeing five student-athletes break their personal-bests, and two beating their season-bests. The Lyons were paced by junior Corrin Moss, who ran her personal best by 45 seconds (19:48.20) to place 36th out of 257 runners. As a team the Lyons finished above conference opponent Emerson, who placed 23rd. The Lyons are set to compete at the Seven Sisters Championship in Northampton, Massachusetts on Saturday. Action will begin at 11am.

 

GOLF

The Lyons had a solid showing last weekend at the Williams Fall Invitational, placing 9th out of 16 teams. The Lyons were led by sophomore Stephanie Spitzer, who finished 13th overall out of 95 golfers. Spitzer shot a 78 in round one, which was her best score on the course in her career. She followed up with a score of 80 in round two for an overall score of 158. MHC will head to Bloomfield, New Jersey this weekend to compete at the NYU Invitational at 1pm.


RIDING

Mount Holyoke is idle until October 14 when it travels to the Williams College Show.

 

TENNIS

The Lyons went 0-1 last week shouldering a tough 5-4 loss to Division I Holy Cross on Thursday. MHC saw senior captain Ishita Tibrewal (Kolkata, India) even the match at 2-2 with a 6-0, 6-1 win, while first year Anya Gerasimova (Salem, Ore.) then made it a 3-2 edge for the Lyons after she recorded a 6-0, 6-4 win. The match came down to a final battle with sophomore Catherine Peabody (San Francisco, Calif.), but Holy Cross pulled out a 10-8 win in a super tie-breaker. Mount Holyoke (1-1) will be back in action next weekend, hosting the 2017 NEWITT Tournament.


ROWING

Mount Holyoke will compete for the first time this year at the Quinsigamond Snake Regatta in Worcester, Massachusetts. The start time is to be determined.
