Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Sept. 11th

SOCCER

Mount Holyoke went 1-1 last week, shouldering a tough loss to #14 Amherst, before rebounding with a come-from-behind victory over Southern Vermont to close out the week. In the 2-1 win over the Mountaineers, the Lyons benefited from an own goal before senior forward Sara Sanaú Ruiz (Zaragoza, Spain) posted the game-winner with less than five minutes to play. MHC (2-2-0) is back in action this week beginning Tuesday when it travels to Western New England for a 4:30pm contest. The Lyons wrap-up play on Saturday, opening NEWMAC play against Emerson at 1pm. FIELD HOCKEY

The Lyons went 1-1 last week, shouldering a 3-2 loss to #13 Amherst before besting Castleton on the road by a 3-1 margin. Junior captain Colby Newsham (Harvard, Mass.) helped MHC to the victory, posting two goals on the afternoon. Mount Holyoke (2-1) is back on the field this week for a three-game set beginning Wednesday in a 6:30pm match at Williams. The Lyons return home to open NEWMAC play on Saturday against Clark at 1pm before welcoming Thomas (ME) on Sunday at 11am. VOLLEYBALL

Mount Holyoke posted a 2-1 mark last week, earning wins over MCLA (3-0) and Elms (3-1) before falling to Simmons (3-0). Junior middle hitter Jamesa Allen (Orlando, Fla.) put forth a strong defensive effort on the week with 16 total blocks, including seven in the loss to the Sharks on Saturday. Mount Holyoke (4-1) is back on the court on Tuesday when it opens conference action at Wheaton at 7pm. The Lyons close out the week on Saturday at Wellesley at 2pm. CROSS COUNTRY

Mount Holyoke kicked-off its season last weekend, finishing seventh overall at the Smith College Invitational. Junior Corrin Moss (Columbus, Ohio) was the first to cross the line for the Lyons, finishing 20th overall. It also marked personal best times at Smith for three runners, including Moss. Mount Holyoke is right back in action on Saturday, traveling to UMass-Dartmouth for an 11:15am race.

 

GOLF

Under the direction of seventh-year head coach Tim Walko, the Mount Holyoke golf team opens its 2017-18 season on Saturday at the Ann S. Batchelder Invitational, hosted by Wellesley College at the Nehoiden Golf Club. Action begins on Saturday at 11am and continues on Sunday with a 9am start time. The Lyons are coming off a season in which they finished second overall at the Liberty League Championships, aided by All-League Second Team performances from three student-athletes, including returners Susan Lee (Irvine, Calif.) and Stephanie Spitzer (Hinsdale, Ill.).


RIDING

Led by longtime-head coach C.J. Law, the Mount Holyoke riding team kicks-off its 2017-18 campaign on Saturday at the 2017 Preseason Tournament of Champions, hosted by Randolph College. The Lyons will look to continue its strong momentum from last season in which it captured the Zone 1 Championship and finished 11th overall at the IHSA National Championships. Among this year's top returners include sophomore Franny Eremeeva (Northampton, Mass.), who took home Regional Reserve High Point Flat Rider honors in 2016-17.

 

TENNIS

Under the direction of 25th year head coach Aldo Santiago, the Mount Holyoke tennis team is set to begin the 2017-18 campaign on the road against Simmons College on Sunday at 12pm. The Lyons enter the new season after its third straight NEWMAC Semifinal appearnace a year ago. Returning for Mount Holyoke is sopphomore Ching-Ching Huang, who led the Lyons last year with a 15-1 singles record, which is the most wins in a season since 2008.
