Amber Legare Named the Lyon of the Week; Also Honored by NEWBA

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Senior captain Amber Legare has been named the Lyon of the Week, following her outstanding performances last week that led the Lyons basketball team to a 1-1 mark. Additionally, Legare was also named to the NEWBA Weekly Honor Roll.

A forward out of Chicopee, Mass., Legare recorded a combined 43 points with 25 rebounds, a steal and three blocks last week. She shot 16-of-35 from field goal range, while also going 10-of-11 from the free throw line.

In a 45-41 win at Clark, Legare posted 14 points with 12 rebounds. She also chipped in with a steal and two blocks. She then put forth an outstanding performance in MHC’s 77-51 loss to Babson, posting a game-best 29 points and 13 rebounds. Legare shot 10-of-19 from field goal range and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the line. She also added a block.

Through 17 games, Legare leads the team in scoring, averaging 17.3 points per contest. She is also owns a 10.6 rebounding average, which is tops on the team, while adding 24 assists, 15 steals and 26 blocks. Legare, who is a two-time NEWMAC Player of the Week recipient this season, is currently averaging 35.4 minutes played per game.

Among the conference's best, Legare is second in points per game and third in boards per contest. Overall, she ranks first in the NEWMAC in offensive caroms per game with 3.9, while also sitting third in total rebounds (180). Legare has posted 10 points or more in 15 of 17 games this season, recording 10 double-doubles overall.

The former Chicopee Comprehensive High School standout, who surpassed the 1,000-career point mark on December 9, now has 1,160 career points – good for fourth all-time in program history – with 808 rebounds over an 89 game span in her career.

Mount Holyoke (5-12; 2-6 NEWMAC) returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Smith for a 7pm NEWMAC showdown. The Lyons then host Wellesley on Saturday in a 1pm conference tilt.
